Modification of Logos

The University’s logos may not be altered. This includes overlaying them with other designs or lettering, displaying only part of a logo, or changing the colors.


The University’s colors are Carolina Blue and White. Navy Blue, Grey, Silver and Black are used to complement the primary color palette.

Use with Other Trademarks (Co-Branding)

Any use of University marks with other trademarks must be approved by the Director of Trademarks and Licensing, or through a University contract.


Students, alumni and fans generate many great ideas for new University products. UNC only considers products that are of high quality and in good taste. Please note the following products that UNC will NOT license:

  • Alcoholic beverages
  • Inherently dangerous products, such as firearms and explosives
  • Obscene/Disparaging products that may damage UNC’s reputation
  • Gambling-related products
  • Sexually suggestive products

Additionally, material that may be demeaning to individuals or institutions (including but not limited to racial, ethnic, gender, or disability-related matters) may not be used in conjunction with University marks.

Profanity may not be used in conjunction with University marks.

Commercially-Licensed Usage

The following policies, in addition to those above, apply to the manufacturing of licensed goods. Please note that each item must be approved in advance and in writing through the University’s licensing agent, IMG College Licensing; and that factors in addition to those listed herein may be taken into account when deciding whether to grant approval.


Must have expiration date on packaging.

Current Student-Athletes

Use of current student-athletes’ names, images or likenesses is impermissible and such use would violate NCAA rules and regulations and may render student-athletes ineligible for games.

Carolina Music and Songs

Any commercial use of UNC music, including but not limited to the following, requires permission through Trademarks and Licensing:

  • UNC Fight Song
  • Here Comes Carolina
  • Hark the Sound
